The Beauty Bar: The 10 Best Beauty Buys Under $10 So, beauty products can be expensive. Don’t get me wrong, I love my high-end makeup. I used to be what I call a “drugstore snob”. Once I started working as a makeup artist, I felt like drugstore makeup just wasn’t good enough. Well, that is very incorrect. As a working makeup artist, in my kit you will find everything from professional airbrush makeup and high-end products to a $2.99 drugstore eyeliner that I have repurchased time and time again. It is safe to say that I love my drugstore makeup, and I have no shame in that. I am all about using products that work well without breaking the bank whenever I can. All that being said, I’m going to share my top 10 beauty products under $10. Some are drugstore items, and some are not. Again, we are all about using what works! P.S.- It was very hard for me to narrow it down to ten. These are not ranked in order of which I like best, because let’s be real, I can’t choose! 1. Covergirl 3-in-1 Outlast Stay Fabulous Foundation Man, is that a long name or what? You saw me mention this one last month and yes, here we go again! This gem will forever be my favorite medium to full coverage foundation. When I first started trying to target my oily skin, I thought using a high-end foundation was the only answer, until I found this guy. It gives a flawless demi-matte finish that lasts all day long. Stay Fabulous is my go-to over all of my “pro” or high end foundations for that reason. Although I have oily skin and this foundation works great for my skin type, it really works well on anyone. And did I mention the fact that it has a primer and concealer built in? See? We’re saving time and money! 2. LA Girl Matte Pigment Gloss When I was at IMATS (International Makeup Artist Trade Show) in April, I picked up LA Girl’s Matte Pigment Gloss after swatching it on my hand and having trouble removing it with a makeup wipe. To some that may be a red flag, but to me that’s rainbows and butterflies. I personally like a lipstick that is going to stay all day while wearing comfortably, and that’s exactly what these do. Like the name suggests, this product goes on like a gloss and dries down to a comfortable matte finish that lasts all day long. These are by far my favorite liquid lipsticks. 3. Maybelline Master Studio Concealer This product is another one of my high-end conversions. I was addicted to MAC’s Pro Longwear Concealer, until I found this. Great coverage and brightening? Yes please! If you use your undereye concealer for highlighting, then this concealer is going to be your best friend. Its creamy formula gives amazing coverage, even on the darkest of dark circles. It doesn’t crease, and also gives a bright look to the undereye. Advertised as a “pro” item, I’d say this item definitely lives up to it’s “pro” status. 4. NYC Liquid Eyeliner I know a lot of makeup artists that use this liner, which tells you right there that it must be good. It’s super black, easy to apply, and super cheap. What could be better than that? You’ll get a smudge-free, precise line every time. 5. Rimmel Stay Matte Powder This is another product I raved about last month. Hey, I can’t help preaching about budget-friendly products that work. What can I say? I won’t go on too long about this one, because it speaks for itself. Use this lightweight powder to set your foundation, and also to blot throughout the day for a flawless matte finish. You can also wear this alone to lightly even out the skintone and stay shine-free. 6. Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil This is the only brow pencil I have tried from the drugstore and actually liked. The slightly waxy texture allows the formula to stay put all day long. The pencil is also very precise, which makes it easy to make hair-like strokes to create that perfect brow. 7. KoKo False Lashes As far as high-end lashes go, prices can run pretty high. Another affordable product I discovered at IMATS was the KoKo lashes. They are a pro brand, and have similar styles to other popular brands without the high price tag. These lashes are great quality, and can be worn more than 10 times (in my experience). The more you take care of your lashes, the longer they will last. My favorite style by KoKo is Goddess. 8. Jordana Best Lash Extreme Volumizing Mascara Mascara is another product that I was sure needed to come from a high-end brand. Nope, wrong again. While there are many great mascaras in the drugstore, Best Lash is definitely my favorite. I look for a mascara that is thickening and lengthening, and this product meets my high standards. It is super black, and the brush is just the right size for both top and bottom lashes. 9. Neutrogena Fresh Naturals Makeup Removing Cleanser I had to include a little skincare in here somewhere! This is a pearlized gel cleanser, with makeup remover formulated in. I like to have makeup remover in my cleanser to ensure all traces of makeup are removed from my skin before bed. This cleanser can be used daily, and it is great for any skin type, especially sensitive. 10. Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lipstick Matte lipsticks are a huge trend right now. The only problem is that sometimes they can be a little drying and uncomfortable. This is because matte lipsticks generally require certain ingredients which can be drying in order to allow a long wear. I am all about finding comfortable, long-wearing lipsticks, and Maybelline could not have done it better. These bold lipsticks are so creamy it’s unbelievable. They remind me of velvet or silk. When wearing these lipsticks you’ll forget there is anything on your lips until you smack them together to feel the amazing velvety finish. As I mentioned before, it was extremely difficult for me to choose only ten affordable products I love, so these are ones I grab for most. How to Melt-Proof Your Summer Makeup Routine: Professional makeup artist shares all her best tips, tricks, and product recommendations for locking your makeup in place and keeping oil at bay even in the hottest summer weather! MUST PIN for anyone that suffers from makeup meltdown! Spring is here and summer is coming, which means if you’re an oily skin girl (or boy), then you need to bring on the oil control. This is especially important for those of you who live in humid areas, becausewell, let’s be honest— even living in a beautiful and tropical place is not all that glamorous when your makeup is running off your face. I myself have super oily skin. You’ll hear me refer to my face as an oil slick sometimes. Yep, it gets that bad. But hey— they say oily skin ages better, right? Well, it’s taken me “ages” to find a perfect routine for my oily skin. It really is a combination of products that help control the oil as a team. So, here you will find a 5 step routine that is bound to keep you shine free. Keep in mind— everyone’s skin is different. My oily skin is different than yours, and your oily skin is probably different than the next. Use a trial and error method of different oil control products and I promise you’ll find a routine (maybe even 4 or 5 routines like myself) that will keep you looking matte and flawless all day long. 1. PREP: In order to prevent your skin from over-producing moisture (oil as we know it), you need to prep your skin with the appropriate moisturizer. This is going to not only act as a protective barrier for your skin, but it also helps control oil. If you do not moisturize, then your skin will over-produce its natural oils due to dehydration. This in turn makes your skin even more oily. I prefer using an oil-free gel moisturizer or a mattifying moisturizer to with help this. Recommended Products: Philosophy Take a Deep Breath Oil-Free Energizing Oxygen Gel Cream Moisturizer – Gel moisturizers are lightweight and will not clog the pores, yet still very hydrating in areas where it is needed. This particular gel formula fuses oxygen into the skin, giving you an energized, hydrated glow. The antioxidants in this moisturizer also help fight environmental stress which causes dullness in the skin’s appearance. Sephora Mattifying Moisturizer Sunscreen – This lightweight cream moisturizer has an 8 hour mattifying effect while also protecting the skin from sun damage with SPF 20. Being that this is a paraben-free and dermatologist-tested product, it is suitable for even the most sensitive skin. The antioxidants in this moisturizer also help protect the skin for anti-aging purposes. Mattifying formulas are typically drier than others, which is great for controlling oil. 2. PRIME: There are two ways to prime the skin: one being a spray and the other being a balm. Think of this as your skin’s shield. It is not only prepping your skin to the second power, but it is also protecting your skin while also blocking any oil from coming through your foundation. Both mattifying and pore minimizing primers are great for this, as large pores usually mean more oil. Recommended Products: Skindinavia Oil Control Primer Spray – This silicone-free lightweight mist preps and primes the skin so that it is ready for an even application of foundation. It will keep your oil under control without clogging your pores, which will help to prevent breakouts. If you don’t like the feel of a traditional priming balm, then this is the perfect alternative. Makeup Forever Skin Equalizer – The mattifying formula out of Makeup Forever’s new Step 1 Equalizers is the best mattifying primer I have ever tried. Formulated with Sebustop Vegetal Complex, this primer instantly erases shine for a long wearing matte appearance to the skin. The Skin Equalizer can be worn alone or applied before foundation. 3: CHOOSING THE RIGHT FOUNDATION: Choosing a foundation that is appropriate for your skin type is definitely important. Mattifying, oil-free, or liquid to powder foundations are ideal for oily skin. It doesn’t matter whether it is high-end or drugstore. As long as you are pairing it with the right products to keep it working at its best ability, you will get every penny’s worth. Recommended Products: CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous Foundation – Although this foundation does not necessarily claim a matte finish, it does a great job at achieving just that. Formulated with a concealer, primer, and foundation all in one, this product allows for flawless coverage that lasts all day. Also, to keep the skin safe it has an SPF of 20. This is my go-to drugstore foundation when I want to keep a matte and flawless face all day. Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation – One of the few liquid to powder foundations that has amazing coverage and keeps your entire face of makeup in place all day long. The formula is silky to touch and delivers a velvety matte finish that is both water and smudge resistant. Since it is oil-free, it won’t clog your pores and is A-okay for acne prone skin. 4: LOCKING: Using a powder to lock your foundation into place while also absorbing oil is a must for a long lasting matte finish. Translucent powders are great for blotting or simply just dusting on top of foundation to set. Foundation powders can be used alone or to set your liquid foundation and add extra coverage. Recommended Products: Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder – This oil-absorbing translucent powder helps control oil without adding coverage, which allows a flawless, natural finish. You can wear this alone, or dust on top of foundation to lock it into place. This powder will also help blur the appearance of large pores. Sephora 8-Hour Mattifying Powder Foundation – Working as a medium to full coverage foundation when used alone, this powder may also be used for setting your liquid foundation. It gives a smooth, shine-free finish that will last all day. Also, it’s great to throw in your bag for touch-ups! 5: LOADING: Makeup setting sprays are definitely the icing on the cake. You can use these in place of a setting powder, or as an extra step to make sure your entire face of makeup is locked and loaded. Think of these sprays as a matte top coat for the face. Recommended Products: Nyx Matte Finish Makeup Setting Spray – This lightweight spray transforms your makeup into a sweat-proof, long-lasting canvas. Eliminating the look of a powdery finish while still keeping you matte, this spray will also cancel out touch-ups throughout the day. Skindinavia Oil Control Finishing Spray – Providing up to 16 hours of oil control, this setting spray will leave you with a beautifully soft matte finish. Your makeup will stay put without creasing, fading or transferring onto your boyfriend’s shirt (which we all know he hates). While it is not absolutely necessary to have every step that I noted in your routine, I hope this was a helpful guide in your journey of finding the perfect spring and summertime makeup routine!
