Beauty Beauty and the makeup industry: a teenage girl / Irish blogger’s opinion. Hey guys! Today I decided to do a post on beauty, a topic that occupies so much of my social media feed but what is beauty? Well according to google… beauty ?bju?ti/ noun 1. a combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight. “I was struck by her beauty” 2. a beautiful woman. “she was considered a great beauty in her youth” adjective AUSTRALIAN/NZinformal 1. good; excellent (used as a general term of approval) However I’m writing this post because in my opinion beauty is impossible to define. It’s not a set of rules that need to be followed in order to reach a certain standard. I had the idea for this post because (as I write this) I’m staying in Italy. I love visiting the small, country villages because they are gorgeous but last night I tried to compare them to some of the beautiful places I had travelled to in Ireland and I found them impossible to compare. That’s when a thought hit me that doesn’t seem to be said a lot: Things can be different yet equally beautiful And the more I thought about it the more sense it made to me. I thought of people who I would consider to be beautiful and realised how different each of them looked, yet when I realised these differences I didn’t want to change what any of these people looked like in order to fit a strict set of rules which tell us what is beautiful and what is not. So why does the media show such an exact standard for beauty? Of course there’s the advertising side of it. Brands , especially fashion and makeup brands, want to to think you need to look a certain way so you’ll buy their products but I think it’s because people need rules. We search for an answer to everything. We’ve always been that way, in fact the Greeks even created the golden ratio to measure beauty. I did a science project on the golden ratio once and some of the people who are most widely considered “beautiful” didn’t even come close to the “perfect” face proportions. This just goes to show, beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. We each see life in a different way so we each consider different things to be beautiful but none of us are wrong, just different.
